New Delhi, Dec 10: Indian Railways reported a significant decrease in train accidents, reducing from 135 in 2014-15 to 31 in 2024-25 and further to 10 in 2025-26 (up to November).
The average number of consequential train accidents from 2004-14 was 171 per year, which highlights the improved safety measures. The Accidents Per Million Train Kilometre (APMTKM) dropped from 0.11 to 0.03, marking a 73% enhancement in safety.
Investment in safety-related activities rose from Rs 39,463 crore in 2014-15 to over Rs 1.16 lakh crore in 2025-26. Various advanced systems, including electrical interlocking at 6,656 stations and the Kavach safety system, were implemented to mitigate human error.
The use of high tensile strength rails and modern track technology further complements safety efforts, along with regular inspections and a web-based monitoring system for track assets.
