Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky fired his army chief, Oleksandr Syrsky, on Tuesday. The decision followed days of loud protests in the capital city of Kyiv. The Clash Over Military Reform
The political turmoil started last week. Zelensky removed a popular defense minister named Mykhailo Fedorov. Fedorov is thirty-five years old and loves modern technology. He tried to update the military with new ideas. However, the older general blocked his plans. Fedorov said Syrsky used rigid, old-fashioned methods from the Soviet era. Many soldiers and citizens supported Fedorov. They felt Syrsky’s style cost too many soldier lives on the front lines.
Street Protests Force A Change
The removal of Fedorov made people angry. Thousands of citizens gathered on the streets of Kyiv. They held signs, chanted slogans, and demanded Syrsky’s removal. Some protesters even waved cheese graters. They did this because Syrsky’s name sounds like the Ukrainian word for cheese. The street uproar grew louder each day. Zelensky tried to call for unity. He held many meetings with his military team, but the pressure didn’t stop. Finally, Zelensky yielded to the public outcry and replaced the general.
A New Generation Takes Charge
The new army leader, Mykhailo Drapaty, is forty-three years old. People respect him. He previously led the country’s ground forces. Many soldiers like his modern style of leadership. Fedorov praised the appointment. He said Drapaty’s new role brings fresh hope. Zelensky offered Fedorov a new job in technology. But Fedorov hasn’t accepted it yet. Zelensky stated that the military must pressure Russia to force a peace deal.
