Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed deep sorrow over the devastation caused by the powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela and reiterated India’s readiness to assist the South American nation during this difficult period.

In a message posted on X, the Prime Minister conveyed condolences on behalf of the people of India to the Government and citizens of Venezuela, particularly to families who lost loved ones in the disaster.

“Deeply saddened by the devastation caused by the severe earthquakes in Venezuela. On behalf of the people of India, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Venezuela, especially to the families who have lost their loved ones,” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister also prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured and expressed solidarity with all those affected by the tragedy.

“India stands ready to extend all possible assistance,” he added, underscoring India’s commitment to supporting countries facing humanitarian crises.

The statement came after two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela in quick succession. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the first earthquake measured 7.1 magnitude, followed just one minute later by a stronger 7.5 magnitude tremor. Both earthquakes struck near the coastal town of Moron, approximately 160 kilometres west of Caracas.

The earthquakes occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, increasing the likelihood of significant damage and destruction. Strong tremors were felt across Caracas, with reports of collapsed buildings and damaged infrastructure emerging from several regions.

In response to the disaster, Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Rodriguez declared a nationwide State of Emergency, urging citizens to remain alert and calm as rescue and relief operations continued.

Rodriguez also announced the temporary closure of Maiquetia International Airport after earthquake-related damage was reported. Security agencies, healthcare personnel, and civil protection teams have been deployed nationwide to assist affected communities and conduct search-and-rescue operations.

Venezuela’s Interior, Justice and Peace Minister Diosdado Cabello confirmed that several buildings collapsed in the eastern part of the Caracas metropolitan region. Authorities also warned residents about the possibility of powerful aftershocks and advised them to avoid staying inside damaged buildings.

The seismic activity was felt beyond Venezuela’s borders, with reports indicating that strong tremors were experienced in several cities across neighbouring Colombia.

The USGS has warned that the twin earthquakes could potentially lead to high casualties and extensive infrastructure damage, given their magnitude and shallow depth.

Conclusion

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message of solidarity highlights India’s commitment to supporting nations affected by natural disasters. As Venezuela grapples with the aftermath of powerful earthquakes and widespread damage, international cooperation and humanitarian assistance are expected to play a crucial role in recovery and relief efforts.
