PM Modi Congratulates Sushila Karki on Appointment as Nepal’s Interim PM, Reaffirms India’s Commitment to Peace & Prosperity

Sushila Karki on her assumption of office as Prime Minister of Nepal's interim government

New Delhi, Sep 13 India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Sushila Karki on her assumption of office as Prime Minister of Nepal’s interim government, reaffirming India’s commitment to Nepal’s peace and prosperity.

Karki, 73, is the first woman Prime Minister of Nepal and previously served as the country’s first woman Chief Justice. Her appointment, made under the “principle of necessity,” follows extensive consultations and comes despite constitutional provisions that generally require a Prime Minister to be a member of the House of Representatives, a criterion Karki does not meet.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs welcomed the formation of the new government, expressing hope for peace and stability and vowing to continue close cooperation with Nepal.
