Mumbai, June 25, 2026: Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has appealed to residents living in housing societies where Piped Natural Gas (PNG) infrastructure is already available to apply for PNG connections without delay, as the Government of India pushes for faster adoption of cleaner domestic fuel across the country.
The move follows a Gazette Notification issued on March 24, 2026, under the Essential Commodities Act, which mandates urban households with access to PNG networks to transition from LPG to PNG. According to the notification, LPG cylinder supplies to addresses located in areas where PNG is available may cease within 90 days from the effective date mentioned in individual notices.
The government has emphasized the shift to PNG as part of its broader strategy to promote cleaner, safer, economical, and environmentally friendly energy solutions while reducing India’s dependence on imported LPG. Since domestic natural gas availability is sufficient to meet household requirements, wider PNG adoption is expected to improve energy security and lower import-related costs.
MGL stated that it has already connected more than 32 lakh households across Mumbai, Thane, Mira-Bhayander, Navi Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Latur, Dharashiv, Chitradurg, and Davangere. The company has laid over 8,000 kilometres of steel and polyethylene pipelines to expand PNG access to additional households.
Residents who have not yet applied for PNG connections are advised to begin the registration process immediately. The complete process, including last-mile connectivity, installation, and commissioning, can take up to two months depending on site-specific conditions.
To encourage adoption, MGL has introduced customer-friendly payment plans and a zero upfront registration cost scheme for residential consumers. The company has also launched a special initiative to bring government institutions under the PNG network.
Speaking on the initiative, Praveer Kumar Srivastava, Managing Director of Mahanagar Gas Limited, said that consumers should apply for PNG connections at the earliest to avoid any disruption in domestic gas supply. He added that MGL’s customer care and marketing teams are fully prepared to assist residents throughout the registration and installation process.
Customers can register for PNG connections through MGL’s customer care numbers, official website, WhatsApp services, or designated walk-in centres. The company has also warned consumers against cyber fraud and fake agents, advising them not to make payments to marketing agents, plumbers, technicians, or salespersons during registration. All payments should be made only through official MGL channels.
Residents who have already obtained a PNG connection must apply for surrender of their LPG connection within 30 days of receiving PNG services.
The transition aligns with the Government of India’s vision of expanding the City Gas Distribution (CGD) network and promoting cleaner and more reliable domestic fuel solutions across urban India.
