New Delhi, Feb 19: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on Thursday described India as one of the company’s fastest-growing markets globally, highlighting the country’s rapid adoption of Artificial Intelligence and expanding user base.
Speaking on the sidelines of the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi, Altman said India represents a significant growth opportunity for OpenAI, particularly in the deployment of advanced AI tools across education, enterprise, and developer ecosystems.
“This is one of our fastest-growing markets in the world — possibly the fastest at this point. It is certainly the fastest for Codex,” Altman said, underscoring strong traction for OpenAI’s developer-focused offerings.
He revealed that India now accounts for more than 100 million weekly users of ChatGPT, spanning students, educators, software developers, and entrepreneurs. The scale of adoption, he noted, reinforces India’s growing importance within the global AI landscape.
At the summit, Altman announced the launch of the “OpenAI for India” initiative, aimed at building local AI infrastructure, strengthening skills development, and fostering strategic partnerships to accelerate AI innovation tailored to Indian requirements.
