New Delhi, April 07: Indian Railways has deployed AI-enabled video surveillance systems across 1,874 stations to strengthen passenger safety and security, marking a major step in its digital transformation during 2025–26.
The advanced system enables automated detection of suspicious activities such as intrusion and loitering, along with facial recognition capabilities for real-time identification and monitoring. Highlighting the initiative, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasised that artificial intelligence is playing a transformative role in modernising railway security, describing cameras as the “eyes” and AI as the “brain” of the system.
Upgraded passenger information systems
The Railways has also expanded the Integrated Passenger Information System (IPIS), enhancing real-time communication with passengers. Equipped with Electronic Train Indicator Boards, Coach Guidance Systems and Public Address Systems, IPIS ensures timely dissemination of train information.
Integration with the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) has enabled automated announcements at 1,405 stations, improving accuracy and passenger convenience.
Enhanced communication and telecom backbone
To strengthen operational safety, Tunnel Communication Systems have been deployed across key routes, including the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), ensuring uninterrupted communication in tunnels and difficult terrains.
In parallel, Indian Railways has upgraded its Unified Telecom Backbone Infrastructure using IP MPLS technology, a high-capacity network designed to support mission-critical applications.
The system enables centralised access to video surveillance and supports key platforms such as Passenger Reservation System (PRS), Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS), Freight Operations Information System (FOIS), SCADA and Mobile Train Radio Communication.
So far, IP MPLS has been commissioned at 1,396 stations, significantly boosting network reliability and bandwidth capacity.
Towards a smarter railway ecosystem
These initiatives reflect Indian Railways’ continued focus on leveraging cutting-edge technology to build a safer, smarter and more efficient rail network. The integration of AI, telecom infrastructure and real-time passenger systems aligns with the broader vision of a digitally empowered and modernised transport ecosystem.
