Beijing, May 28: India and China held the 35th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) on Border Affairs in Beijing, reviewing border management and broader cooperation as both sides sought to sustain momentum toward normalising bilateral relations.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the discussions covered border delimitation, management mechanisms and cross-border cooperation, with both sides agreeing to maintain regular diplomatic and military-level engagement.

The Indian side pressed for an early meeting of the Expert Level Mechanism on Trans-border Rivers, while both countries agreed to continue dialogue through established frameworks, including understandings reached during the 24th Special Representatives (SR) Talks.

“The discussions were constructive and forward looking,” the MEA said, adding that the two sides reviewed developments in border areas and expressed satisfaction over progress in maintaining peace and tranquillity, which has supported gradual normalisation of bilateral ties.

The Indian delegation was led by Sujit Ghosh, Joint Secretary (East Asia), while the Chinese delegation was headed by Hou Yanqi, Director General of the Boundary and Oceanic Affairs Department of China’s Foreign Ministry.

Both countries also agreed to undertake substantive preparations for the next Special Representatives meeting, scheduled to be held in China.

During the visit, the Indian delegation held separate meetings with Liu Jinsong, Director-General of the Department of Asian Affairs, and Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Hong Lei.

The engagement follows India-China bilateral consultations under the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) held in New Delhi in April, where both sides reviewed cooperation on security, trade, connectivity and people-to-people exchanges.

The SCO consultations were led by India’s National Coordinator Ambassador Alok A. Dimri and China’s National Coordinator Ambassador Yan Wenbin, with both nations agreeing to continue coordination and dialogue within the multilateral grouping.

The renewed diplomatic engagement reflects efforts by New Delhi and Beijing to stabilise ties and deepen communication channels amid broader regional and strategic considerations.
