Mumbai, May 26: Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and Tata Motors have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to pilot a structured system for the collection and recycling of used automotive lubricants, supporting India’s circular economy and evolving environmental compliance framework.
The partnership aims to create an organised and traceable process for managing used lubricants classified as hazardous waste, covering collection, storage and recycling through authorised channels.
Under the initiative, used lubricants will be converted into high-quality re-refined base oil, helping improve resource efficiency and reduce environmental risks linked to improper disposal.
The pilot aligns with India’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework and is expected to establish scalable benchmarks for responsible waste management in the automotive and energy sectors.
HPCL Executive Director – Lubes, Ch Srinivas, said the initiative marks an important step toward achieving circularity in used oil management and lowering operational carbon footprints.
Tata Motors Head – Parts and Services, Vikram Agrawal, said responsible recycling of used automotive lubricants requires credible partnerships, clear processes and execution at scale, adding that the collaboration with HPCL seeks to build a replicable industry model.
Under the agreement, HPCL will manage aggregation and transportation of used lubricants through authorised collection systems and ensure supply to registered recyclers.
Tata Motors will leverage its nationwide authorised service network to facilitate structured collection and promote responsible disposal practices among vehicle owners and service ecosystems.
The pilot programme will be rolled out across select states and overseen by a joint committee from both organisations to monitor execution and assess scalability.
Tata Motors said the initiative complements its broader mobility and after-sales ecosystem, supported by its Sampoorna Seva 2.0 platform and Fleet Edge connected vehicle solutions, alongside a nationwide network of over 4,500 sales and service touchpoints.
