New Delhi, Nov 30: The Indian government has directed messaging apps, including WhatsApp and Telegram, to block access unless users have an active SIM card, as part of the new Telecommunication Cybersecurity Amendment Rules, 2025.
This regulation, for the first time, classifies these apps as Telecommunication Identifier User Entities (TIUEs), requiring them to maintain a continuous link to a user’s SIM card within 90 days.
Additionally, users on web browsers will be logged out every six hours and must re-authenticate via a QR code.
Officials believe this will curb misuse by cybercriminals, who currently exploit gaps in user verification. However, experts are divided on its effectiveness, with some concerned about potential loopholes that scammers might exploit using forged IDs.
Advocates assert that these rules could enhance cybersecurity and accountability, aligning with security measures in banking and trading sectors.
