New Delhi, Dec 05 The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has relaxed some pilot duty rules with immediate effect after IndiGo faced a severe staff shortage, leading to nearly 500 flight cancellations across India.
The regulator withdrew its earlier order that “no leave shall be substituted for weekly rest,” providing partial relief to airlines to ensure continuity and stability of operations.
The disruption triggered criticism in Parliament, with opposition members highlighting alleged monopolistic practices and regulatory lapses. Delhi Airport also issued a passenger advisory confirming that all IndiGo domestic flights on 5th December were cancelled until midnight, while other carriers continued normal operations.
In November alone, IndiGo recorded 1,232 flight cancellations. The Ministry of Civil Aviation, led by Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, held a high-level review with IndiGo management, urging the airline to normalise operations, avoid fare hikes, and ensure passengers are informed and supported with necessary facilities.
The DGCA’s move aims to stabilise airline operations and reduce inconvenience for travellers while the airline works to restore full flight schedules.
