Centre Reports 5.96 Lakh PNG Connections Gasified, Infra Push Continues

Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri explains reduction in subsidised LPG cylinder refills under Ujjwala Yojana

New Delhi, May 02: The government on Saturday reported steady expansion in Piped Natural Gas (PNG) infrastructure, with 5.96 lakh connections gasified and facilities created for an additional 2.68 lakh connections, taking the total capacity to 8.64 lakh.

Customer additions remain strong, with around 6.66 lakh new registrations. As of May 1, over 43,350 consumers have shifted from LPG to PNG, indicating a growing preference for pipeline-based fuel.

In the LPG segment, more than 22.78 lakh 5-kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders have been sold since April 2026. Public sector oil marketing companies have conducted over 9,980 awareness camps since April 3, driving sales of more than 1.71 lakh 5-kg cylinders.

Commercial LPG sales reached 2,05,849 metric tonnes (over 108.34 lakh 19-kg cylinders), while Auto LPG sales stood at 10,698 metric tonnes during the same period.

On the supply front, gas allocation to fertiliser plants has been increased to nearly 98% of their six-month average consumption. Refineries are operating at high capacity with sufficient crude inventories, and domestic LPG production has been stepped up to meet demand.

An inter-ministerial Joint Working Group has been formed to ensure adequate petrochemical feedstock supply. Since April 9, over 10,000 metric tonnes of propylene and 1,200 metric tonnes of Butyl Acrylate have been supplied to key industries.

The government reiterated that all fuel retail outlets are functioning normally across the country. Despite isolated instances of panic buying, petrol and diesel stocks remain adequate, and prices at public sector outlets remain unchanged.
