Biodiesel from Micro Algae- A Promising Alternate Fuel

New Delhi, Aug 10: This year World Biofuel Day – 2022 is being celebrated with theme of “Biofuels towards a Carbon NeutralWorld”. The theme shows India’s commitment towards five nectar elements, Panchamrit, to deal with the climate change. Panchamritincludes net zero emission by 2070, non-fossil energy capacity to 500 GW by 2030, 50% energy requirement to be met thru renewable sources, reduction of 1 billion tons of carbon emission by 2030,reduction of carbon intensity of economy by less than 45% by 2030.

Biofuels can play a key role towards achieving the above goals of cleaner environment. India has published Biofuels Policy in 2018 to promote Biofuels in the country. Biofuel policy categorize biofuels in two group one is first generation Biofuels and other one is advance Biofuels. Under the advance biofuels, there is one category of biofuels called 3G biofuels which includes biofuels produced from algae. Since algae can form more biomass per area than terrestrial biomass, they have great promise for future biofuel production on marginal land or in the ocean.

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has developed process for production of Biodiesel from microalgae. Trials for commercializing the technology is going on at the university. On dry basis, 25% oil can be produced from algae and biodiesel can be produced from algae by extracting oil from algae and processing it further.

Algae is also known for drastically reducing carbon dioxide emissions by converting them into oxygen and biomass through photosynthesis. The microalgae can be grown in both open-culture systems such as ponds, lakes and raceways, or in highly controlled closed-culture systems like photobioreactors.

Government of India has set target of achieving 5% biodiesel blending by 2030. To achieve the target around 800 Cr. Litres of Biodiesel will be required. To achieve the target alternate route of production of Biodiesel from algae is very much promising. Production of Biodiesel from algae is in nascent stage only. Researches are being made around the world for high efficiency algae production and decreasing the production cost. Many researchers have found the way for the same and in India also, technology is under trial stage to produce biodiesel from algae on commercial scale.
