Andhra Pradesh Notifies Five E-Mobility Cities in Big Green Push

Amaravati, May 01: The Government of Andhra Pradesh has notified five model E-Mobility cities, signalling a major push toward building a sustainable and technology-driven urban mobility ecosystem under its electric vehicle (EV) strategy.

The identified cities—Visakhapatnam, Rajahmundry, Vijayawada, Nellore, and Tirupati—represent the state’s five administrative regions and will serve as pilot hubs for EV adoption and infrastructure development.

The initiative is part of the Andhra Pradesh Sustainable Electric Mobility Policy (4.0) 2024–29, with the Municipal Administration & Urban Development Department approving an operational framework and strategic roadmap for implementation across Urban Local Bodies.

The plan aims to position Andhra Pradesh as a leading hub for electric mobility by focusing on EV infrastructure, green transport systems, and sustainable urban planning, aligned with the state’s long-term goal of achieving carbon neutrality in the transport sector by 2047.

The framework outlines the development of high-density EV charging networks, including one charging station per 3×3 km grid in cities and one every 30 km along highways. It also includes battery swapping stations, green corridors, zero-emission zones, and integrated mobility ecosystems.

To support implementation, the state has proposed a dedicated ₹250 crore corpus fund, with ₹50 crore allocated to each model city for infrastructure deployment, grid strengthening, fleet electrification, and innovation initiatives.

A phased rollout strategy will cover EV charging and battery swapping infrastructure, electric public transport, renewable energy integration, and smart mobility planning. Dedicated City E-Mobility Cells will oversee execution at the local level.

City-specific interventions have also been outlined. Visakhapatnam will focus on green tourism mobility and electric BRTS corridors, while Vijayawada will develop logistics-focused EV infrastructure. Rajahmundry will explore electrification of river transport, Nellore will prioritise EV logistics for fisheries and coastal transport, and Tirupati will implement zero-emission mobility solutions for pilgrim transport, including electrification of Tirumala shuttle services.

The initiative underscores the state’s broader strategy to accelerate EV adoption, enhance urban mobility, and build a low-carbon transport ecosystem.
