Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has entered into a strategic partnership with India Post to introduce doorstep PNG gas meter reading services in Mumbai. The initiative marks a significant step towards improving customer service by combining MGL’s digital infrastructure with India Post’s extensive and trusted last-mile delivery network.
Under the agreement, South Mumbai has been selected for the pilot phase, after which the service will be expanded to other parts of Mumbai in a phased manner. With this collaboration, MGL becomes the first City Gas Distribution (CGD) company in India to engage India Post for domestic gas meter reading operations.
As part of the programme, uniformed India Post officials will visit MGL’s residential consumers to record PNG gas meter readings using a dedicated mobile application. Every reading will be supported by a photograph of the gas meter and transmitted securely to MGL through an Application Programming Interface (API), ensuring greater accuracy, transparency, and real-time data processing.
The initiative also focuses on enhancing customer trust and household convenience. Wherever feasible, women India Post field staff will be deployed for home visits, while all meter-reading activities will be conducted only for verified consumer addresses provided by MGL.
According to Praveer Kumar Srivastava, Managing Director of MGL, the partnership will strengthen operational efficiency while delivering a seamless experience for consumers. Amitabh Singh, Chief Postmaster General, Maharashtra Circle, said the collaboration opens new opportunities for India Post by expanding its public service role beyond traditional postal operations.
Following the successful completion of the pilot project, MGL and India Post will jointly assess performance based on accuracy, consumer experience, and operational efficiency before extending the service to other regions across Mumbai and additional areas served by MGL.
