India’s economic engagement with the world is set to receive a major boost as Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced that the India-United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will be implemented from July 15. Addressing a press conference while reviewing the 12-year tenure of the Narendra Modi-led government, the minister said India has transformed itself from a nation of untapped potential into a confident and self-reliant global economic power.
According to Goyal, despite facing major global challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, India continued its growth trajectory and converted crises into economic opportunities through decisive leadership and policy reforms.
The minister highlighted that India has signed nine historic Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. These agreements have collectively provided Indian businesses access to 38 developed countries, creating fresh opportunities for exporters, entrepreneurs, farmers, fishermen, and women-led enterprises.

Highlighting India’s growing global stature, the minister said 33 countries have conferred their highest civilian honours on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reflecting the country’s expanding diplomatic influence and international recognition.
On the domestic front, Goyal underlined the government’s focus on inclusive development and transparent delivery of welfare schemes through digital technology. He cited several flagship initiatives that have significantly expanded social security coverage across the country.
According to the minister, more than 55 crore Jan Dhan accounts have been opened, including over 32 crore accounts held by women. The government has also continued to provide free food grains to more than 81 crore beneficiaries, while over 60 crore Ayushman Bharat health cards have been issued to ensure affordable healthcare access.
He further stated that more than 58 crore citizens are covered under the PM Suraksha Bima Yojana, while over four crore houses have been constructed under the PM Awas Yojana. In addition, around 11 crore households have benefited from the Ujjwala scheme, and over 12 crore toilets have been built under the Swachh Bharat Mission, contributing to improved sanitation and public health.
The minister also emphasized improvements in internal security and the government’s efforts to integrate youth from previously Maoist-affected regions into the national mainstream through development-oriented initiatives.
Concluding his remarks, Goyal said the collective aspiration of 140 crore Indians to build a Viksit Bharat by 2047 remains the guiding mission of the government and will continue to drive policy decisions aimed at economic growth, social welfare, and global competitiveness.
