Featured Snippet Paragraph:
India and Fiji have strengthened bilateral cooperation in cybersecurity, digital resilience, law enforcement, and capacity building following a high-level meeting between Indian High Commissioner Suneet Mehta and Fiji’s Minister for Policing and Communications Ioane Naivalurua. The partnership also extends to education and agriculture through book distribution programs and agricultural support initiatives aimed at improving food security and farmer incomes.
As part of India’s broader outreach initiatives, the Indian High Commission and the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre distributed books to students at DAV Boys School in Suva. The initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of empowering youth through education and promoting global cultural connections, further reinforcing the long-standing friendship between India and Fiji.
India’s support for Fiji’s agricultural sector also continued with the distribution of cowpea seeds to farmers in Volivoli Village in Sigatoka. According to the Indian High Commission, previous seed distribution efforts have resulted in better harvests, improved food security, and increased incomes for local farming communities. The initiative reflects India’s ongoing commitment to sustainable agriculture, rural development, and shared prosperity.
Earlier, on May 8, High Commissioner Suneet Mehta handed over cowpea seeds imported from India to 100 farmers in Nadi, in the presence of Fiji Government Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways Inosi Kuridrani and New Valley Processors Chairman Vinesh Rai. The program builds upon the success of cowpea cultivation on approximately 300 acres in Fiji’s Ra province, which has helped improve farmer livelihoods and contributed to Fiji becoming an exporter of cowpea seeds.
India and Fiji share deep historical and cultural ties dating back to 1879, when Indian laborers were brought to Fiji under the British indenture system to work on sugar plantations. Over the decades, the relationship has evolved into a comprehensive partnership based on mutual respect, development cooperation, cultural exchange, and strong people-to-people connections. India continues to support Fiji’s nation-building efforts through development assistance, capacity-building programs, education initiatives, and agricultural cooperation.
The latest engagements underscore the expanding scope of India-Fiji relations, with both countries seeking to strengthen cooperation across strategic, economic, educational, agricultural, and technological sectors while fostering sustainable growth and regional stability.
