New Delhi, May 17: The Delhi Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, has approved a reduction in Value Added Tax (VAT) on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) in the National Capital Region from 25 per cent to 7 per cent, aiming to cushion the aviation sector against rising global fuel costs.

The concessional VAT rate will remain in force for an initial six-month period and is expected to help contain airfare inflation amid global oil supply disruptions linked to the Iran conflict.

Separately, Chief Minister Gupta attended a felicitation and free bicycle distribution programme for meritorious girl students in the R.K. Puram Assembly constituency.

Addressing the event, Gupta announced that the Delhi government will provide bicycles to all girls enrolling in Class 9 in government schools. With nearly 1.30 lakh girls entering Class 9 annually, the initiative is aimed at improving access to education, mobility and safety.

The Chief Minister said the bicycle scheme would support students through their academic journey, including higher education and coaching. Distribution under the government programme is scheduled to begin after the summer vacation.

Gupta described girls’ education as central to social and national development and termed bicycles a symbol of confidence and independence for young students.

She also commended R.K. Puram MLA Anil Sharma and Rotary Club Delhi Imperial for distributing bicycles to over 500 students ahead of the formal rollout of the government scheme, calling the effort a strong example of community-led support for women’s empowerment.

The Delhi government, she added, remains focused on expanding educational opportunities and ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder girls from pursuing their studies and aspirations.
