Mahanagar Gas Limited increases CNG Prices by Rs 2/kg across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region

Mumbai, May 14 State-run gas distributor Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) has increased compressed natural gas (CNG) prices by Rs 2 per kg across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), citing rising input costs.

Following the revision, CNG prices now stand at Rs 84 per kg, up from Rs 82 per kg, with immediate effect across Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai.

The latest hike has triggered a strong response from auto-rickshaw unions, which have demanded a revision in fares. Union representatives have sought at least a Re 1 increase in base fare, arguing that frequent fuel price hikes are eroding driver earnings and making operations unsustainable under the current fare structure.

According to unions, rising operating costs are putting pressure on drivers who rely heavily on CNG, a primary fuel for auto-rickshaws, taxis, and public transport in the region.

The price hike is expected to impact daily commuters across the MMR, where CNG remains one of the most widely used transport fuels.

Meanwhile, the government recently maintained that India has sufficient petroleum reserves, and LPG supplies remain stable for domestic consumption.

On the markets front, shares of Mahanagar Gas Limited rose nearly 3% in early trade, hitting an intraday high of Rs 1,072 on the BSE. The stock has recorded a 52-week high of Rs 1,586 and a 52-week low of Rs 902.

For the financial quarter ending FY26, the company reported a net profit of Rs 130 crore, with revenue at Rs 2,052 crore.
