Centre Launches Mizoram Ginger Mission to Boost Farmers’ Incomes

New Delhi, May 14: Jyotiraditya M. Scindia has launched the ₹189.79 crore Mizoram Ginger Mission, a convergence-driven initiative aimed at transforming the state’s ginger sector through value chain integration, processing, and export-led growth.

The programme targets structural inefficiencies in the supply chain, where Geographical Indication (GI)-certified Mizo ginger—known for its high oleoresin content of 6–8%, significantly above the global average—currently yields limited returns for farmers. Despite strong international demand, farmgate prices remain in the range of ₹8–15 per kg, while downstream value can exceed ₹500 per kg.

Positioning the initiative as a “Mizo Ginger Movement,” Scindia outlined a four-pillar strategy focused on convergence of schemes, value addition, branding, and market integration. The mission aims to reduce intermediary layers and strengthen farmer collectives such as cooperatives and Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) to improve price realisation.

Aligned with the vision of Narendra Modi, the initiative seeks to integrate farmers across the entire agricultural value chain—from production to processing, branding, packaging, and exports—thereby enhancing income sustainability.

The mission will establish an integrated infrastructure network, including one central processing hub and three spoke centres, alongside more than 30 targeted interventions. It aims to onboard approximately 20,000 farming households into a traceable, quality-assured ecosystem designed for global competitiveness.

Highlighting export potential, the government has identified key international markets across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. The long-term objective is to position Mizo ginger as a premium global product with end-to-end traceability to individual farmers.

Lalduhoma welcomed the initiative, describing it as a milestone in the state’s agricultural transformation. He emphasised that the programme leverages Mizoram’s strength in high-quality, pharma-grade ginger and provides a structured pathway for value addition and global market access.

The mission is anchored by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region and integrates support from key institutions including the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, Indian Council of Agricultural Research, and Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, alongside private sector participation.

Framed within the broader “Brand North East” strategy—where each state is positioned with a unique agricultural identity—the initiative is expected to deliver a six-fold increase in farmer value realisation, reduce post-harvest losses, and build a robust export-oriented processing ecosystem.

Overall, the Mizoram Ginger Mission reflects a strategic shift toward high-value agriculture, supply chain formalisation, and rural income enhancement through global market linkage.
