South Coastal Railway Zone to Become Operational from June 1

New Delhi, April 29: The government will notify the creation of the South Coastal Railway Zone, effective June 1, in a move aimed at strengthening railway administration in Andhra Pradesh, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said.

The state has received a record rail budget allocation of Rs 10,134 crore, with projects worth approximately Rs 1.06 lakh crore currently under execution to enhance connectivity across ports, tourism centres, and major cities.

The allocation marks a sharp increase from Rs 886 crore in earlier years for the combined Andhra Pradesh–Telangana region. Key infrastructure progress includes 1,759 km of track completed and 3,300 km under development, along with 832 flyovers and underpasses commissioned and 299 under construction. The state has also achieved 100% railway electrification, while 74 stations are undergoing redevelopment.

The minister outlined plans for a high-speed southern corridor network and said the East Coast Railway Corridor is being upgraded to a four-line network, which is expected to double capacity and enable up to 500 additional trains. Andhra Pradesh is currently served by 16 Vande Bharat and 22 Amrit Bharat train services, improving overall travel efficiency.
