Indian Railways Drives Sustainability with 81.59 Lakh Tree Plantation

New Delhi, April 28: Indian Railways has accelerated its sustainability drive, highlighting major gains in electrification, water conservation, afforestation, and renewable energy as part of its long-term green transition strategy aligned with the global “Our Power, Our Planet” vision.

A key milestone is the near-complete electrification of the broad gauge network, with 99.6% coverage (69,873 route km), significantly reducing diesel dependence. The shift has helped cut fuel consumption by 178 crore litres in FY25 compared to FY17, lowering exposure to global oil volatility and import dependence.

The Railways has also made notable progress in sanitation, installing over 3.66 lakh bio-toilets in passenger coaches since 2014. This has eliminated direct discharge of waste on tracks, improving hygiene, protecting soil and groundwater, and enhancing passenger experience.

Afforestation efforts are being scaled up nationwide, with 81.59 lakh trees planted in FY26 alone. Plantation along tracks and stations is helping reduce soil erosion, improve biodiversity, and enhance climate resilience, while also contributing to safer rail infrastructure.

Water management remains a key focus area. Since 2016–17, the Railways has installed 8,313 rainwater harvesting structures and commissioned 185 water recycling plants, including 26 added in the last financial year. Additionally, 109 ponds and wetlands have been restored, aiding groundwater recharge and supporting local ecosystems.

Renewable energy adoption is gaining pace, with 909 MW of solar and 103 MW of wind capacity already operational. The Railways has also tied up an additional 3,300 MW of renewable capacity, strengthening long-term energy security and sustainability.

Further, 100% LED lighting across railway infrastructure and extensive energy efficiency measures have contributed to reduced power consumption, earning multiple national energy conservation awards.

Through these integrated initiatives, Indian Railways is positioning itself as a global leader in sustainable transport, combining large-scale infrastructure with environmental responsibility to deliver greener, safer, and more efficient mobility.
