New Delhi, Feb 22 The government’s commitment to enhancing regional connectivity and urban mobility throughout the National Capital Region (NCR) will be reaffirmed when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits Meerut on Sunday to inaugurate and dedicate to the country a portfolio of infrastructure projects valued at about ₹12,930 crore.
Prime Minister will launch the Namo Bharat train around 12:30 PM and the Meerut Metro during the visit at the Shatabdi Nagar Namo Bharat Station.
Full 82-km Delhi–Meerut RRTS Corridor Dedicated
The dedication of India’s first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), the 82-kilometer Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor, will be a significant highlight of the trip. The final operational segments, which include the 21-kilometer stretch between Meerut South and Modipuram in Uttar Pradesh and the 5-kilometer stretch between Sarai Kale Khan and New Ashok Nagar in Delhi, will also be inaugurated by the prime minister.
The Namo Bharat system, which is designed to reach top speeds of 180 kmph, is expected to significantly cut down on travel time between Delhi and important urban centers like Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Modinagar, and Meerut. This will increase regional integration and unlock economic efficiencies.
Multimodal Integration at Sarai Kale Khan
With easy connections to the Delhi Metro Pink Line, Veer Haqeeqat Rai ISBT, Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, and Ring Road, the originating station at Sarai Kale Khan Namo Bharat Station has grown into a significant multimodal transit hub. In addition, three new stations will be put into service in Meerut: Shatabdi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram. This will improve last-mile connectivity in the city.
Fastest Metro on Shared Infrastructure
Additionally, the Prime Minister will launch the Meerut Metro service between Modipuram and Meerut South. The Metro will function on the same infrastructure as the Namo Bharat RRTS, showcasing integrated transit planning in a first for India.
It will be the fastest metro system in the nation, reaching its full length in about 30 minutes while stopping at all scheduled stations. Its top operating speed is about 120 kmph.
Economic and Sustainability Impact
Officials state that the integrated operation of regional rapid transit and urban metro services establishes a new benchmark for multimodal public transport in India. It is anticipated that the corridor will reduce vehicle emissions, ease traffic, and promote sustainable urban growth throughout the National Capital Region.
The projects are in line with the government’s larger infrastructure modernization agenda, which aims to create environmentally sustainable transportation networks, increase productivity, and improve quality of life.
