New Delhi, Feb 12: The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project, spanning 508 km, is currently underway with Japanese assistance, featuring an elevated design and advanced security measures at stations.
Extensive indigenization efforts are enhancing domestic capabilities in heavy construction machinery, slab track components, and specialized track machines. About 1,000 engineers and skilled workers have been trained in Japanese methodologies, contributing to track works under supervision.
Key innovations include full-span launching methods for girders, indigenous noise barriers, and a Rail Turnover Prevention Device for enhanced safety. Progress includes significant advancements in foundation, girder casting, and tunneling, with substantial completion reported in Gujarat and ongoing development in Maharashtra.
The project’s design accommodates high-frequency operations, with ticket pricing aimed to be competitive against current travel options. Compliance with land acquisition laws and rehabilitation measures is ensured, aligning with “Make in India” initiatives to foster local manufacturing and reduce import reliance.
As of December 2025, an expenditure of ₹ 86,939 crore has been recorded.
