Tariff Cuts to Lower Import Costs in India
Electronics, Textiles and Pharma Likely to Get Cheaper
New Delhi, Feb 03 It is anticipated that the United States and India’s agreement to reduce reciprocal tariffs will improve market access for important Indian export industries and reduce the cost of a number of imported goods, potentially changing the direction of bilateral trade.
Due to lower duties, technology hardware and components like laptops, consumer electronics, and gadgets are likely to become more competitively priced on the import side.
As import costs drop, prices for packaged goods, processed foods, and home appliances may also moderate. Lower import taxes on some agricultural products, such as dairy, processed foods, and pulses, could provide some respite in the face of high food inflation.
However, the government has not yet made a formal announcement regarding the agreement’s specific terms and implementation schedule.
The agreement is anticipated to help Indian exporters in industries like clothing and textiles, which stand to benefit from lower US tariffs. One of India’s main export industries, jewelry and gems, stands to gain from increased price competitiveness in the US market.
Although analysts point out that some products, like steel, aluminum, and copper, are likely to continue to face duties of about 50%, industrial and engineering goods, including chemicals, may see easier market access. Despite the agreement, some auto parts are anticipated to continue to be subject to comparatively high tariffs.
The trade deal was reached following a phone conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump. As part of the agreement, the US will cut tariffs on Indian goods to 18 per cent, while India will ease trade barriers on select US products
. The understanding reportedly also includes India’s commitment to reduce purchases of Russian oil and increase energy imports from the US and potentially Venezuela.
Prime Minister Modi welcomed the development, saying in a post on X that the reduction in tariffs would benefit “Made in India” products and strengthen economic ties between the two countries.
