New Delhi, Jan 29: Expansion of the railway infrastructure between Baikunth and Urkura has been sanctioned by the Ministry of Railways, covering 26.40 kilometers at a cost of ₹426.01 crore.
This new fourth line is a critical addition to the Mumbai-Howrah high-density corridor, which currently operates at saturated capacity.
The expansion is designed to relieve congestion and enhance the punctuality of passenger services, potentially increasing the capacity for additional coaching and reducing delays on this busy route.
Furthermore, the project is expected to boost freight traffic by approximately 14.25 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), generating additional annual earnings of around ₹61.70 crore for Indian Railways.
This development responds to the growing industrial demands in the region, which includes power plants, coal mines, and cement units, thus reinforcing supply chains and supporting industrial growth. Ultimately, the new line aims to improve both passenger travel experience and freight operations, contributing to the region’s economic development.
