New Delhi, Jan 23 Indian Railways’ Trucks-on-Trains (ToT) service is gaining momentum, with operational data indicating rising industry adoption and commercial viability.
According to the Ministry of Railways, the service handled 545 rakes during FY25 (April–December), transporting over three lakh tonnes of freight and generating ₹36.95 crore in revenue. Since inception, ToT has completed more than 1,955 trips, moved over one million tonnes, and earned over ₹131 crore.
The service integrates road flexibility with the efficiency of electrified rail infrastructure on the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC), allowing loaded trucks to be carried on modified flat wagons for the long haul, with only short first- and last-mile road movements. This has reduced transit time on the New Palanpur–New Rewari corridor from nearly 30 hours by road to about 12 hours.
Strong uptake from sectors such as dairy, FMCG, automobiles and food processing reflects growing confidence in the model. Major customers include the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (Amul), with the June 2023 relaunch helping anchor steady volumes.
Operating on the fully electrified Western DFC, the ToT service helps cut logistics costs, bypass highway tolls, reduce congestion and lower emissions. Indian Railways plans to extend the service to additional corridors as infrastructure development progresses.
