- 71.6% growth in India’s power transmission network since April 2014

New Delhi, Jan 22 India’s national power transmission network has crossed a major infrastructure milestone, exceeding 5 lakh circuit kilometres (ckm) of transmission lines (220 kV and above), supported by 1,407 GVA of transformation capacity.
The achievement was marked on January 14, 2026, with the commissioning of a 628 ckm, 765 kV transmission line connecting Bhadla II and Sikar II substations, enabling enhanced evacuation of renewable energy from Rajasthan’s Renewable Energy Zone. The project facilitates the transfer of an additional 1,100 MW of power from the Bhadla, Ramgarh and Fatehgarh solar complexes.
Since April 2014, India’s transmission network has expanded by 71.6%, with the addition of 2.09 lakh ckm of high-voltage transmission lines and 876 GVA of transformation capacity. Inter-regional power transfer capacity has reached 1,20,340 MW, strengthening grid integration and advancing the vision of “One Nation–One Grid–One Frequency.”
Looking ahead, ongoing Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) projects are expected to add nearly 40,000 ckm of transmission lines and 399 GVA of capacity, while Intra-State projects will contribute an additional 27,500 ckm and 134 GVA. These expansions are critical to supporting India’s target of 500 GW of non-fossil power capacity by 2030.
The 5 lakh ckm milestone underscores sustained government investment in strengthening power infrastructure, enhancing grid reliability, and enabling large-scale renewable energy integration across the country.
