India in Elite AI League, World’s Biggest Services Supplier: Vaishnaw

Vaishnaw Highlights AI, Semiconductor Push and Railways as Key to India’s Future

Davos, Jan 22 (IANS): India has established itself as a leading nation in artificial intelligence (AI), actively engaging across all five layers of AI architecture: application, model, chip, infrastructure, and energy, according to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum, he emphasized the importance of large-scale AI diffusion, economic viability, and techno-legal governance. Vaishnaw stated that India is set to be the largest supplier of AI services globally, with a significant return on investment coming from enterprise-level deployments rather than from developing large models.

He noted that most AI applications can be effectively addressed with models in the 20-50 billion parameter range. Additionally, he pointed out the importance of access to GPUs, facilitated through a national compute facility that offers subsidized GPU access to students and innovators, which supports minimizing costs while maximizing ROI in AI development.
