New Delhi, January 21: In January 2023, the Indian government released the ‘Draft National Electricity Policy (NEP) 2026)’ for public consultation, aiming to modernize the power sector and enhance its financial and environmental viability.
This draft seeks to meet the vision of Viksit Bharat by targeting per capita electricity consumption of 2,000 kWh by 2030 and over 4,000 kWh by 2047, while aligning with climate commitments.
Key proposals include advancing capacity expansion through Resource Adequacy plans, tariff reforms to link to indices for annual adjustments, and the exemption of cross-subsidies for certain industries to enhance competitiveness.
It emphasizes a stronger dispute resolution mechanism, encourages renewable energy generation via market-based methods, and promotes the adoption of advanced nuclear technologies to achieve 100 GW capacity by 2047.
Overall, the draft aims to provide reliable power at an affordable price, reflecting significant progress since the initial policy introduced in 2005.
