New Delhi, Jan 01: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced that, starting February 1, 2026, the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process for new FASTag issuances for cars will be discontinued.
This decision aims to enhance public convenience and alleviate the post-activation difficulties faced by users of cars, jeeps, and vans. According to a statement from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, this reform will significantly benefit many road users who have faced delays and inconveniences due to KYV requirements, even when they possess valid vehicle documents.
Existing FASTags issued to cars will not require KYV as a standard procedure unless specific complaints arise, such as issues with loose FASTags, incorrect issuance, or misuse. In cases without complaints, existing car FASTags will be exempt from the KYV requirement.
To improve the accuracy, compliance, and integrity of the system while simplifying the user experience, the NHAI has also reinforced pre-activation validation standards for Issuer Banks. Activation of FASTags will require prior validation of vehicle details from the VAHAN database, removing the previous practice of permitting validation after activation.
In instances where vehicle details are absent from VAHAN, Issuer Banks are mandated to verify details using the Registration Certificate (RC) before activation, ensuring full accountability.
Furthermore, FASTags bought online will only be activated once complete verification by banks is completed. These reforms reflect NHAI’s commitment to creating a more citizen-friendly, transparent, and technology-driven FASTag ecosystem while also strengthening compliance and minimizing grievances.
By transferring the responsibility of validation to Issuer Banks before activation, NHAI aims to provide a streamlined experience for users on National Highways.
