New Delhi, Nov 17: India is identified as a power-surplus nation, but its renewable energy capacity is not fully utilized due to limited capacity tie-ups, according to Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.
At a recent meeting on Pumped Storage Projects (PSPs) in Andhra Pradesh, he emphasized that PSPs can store surplus green power and supply electricity during non-solar hours. To mitigate evaporation losses, he proposed floating solar projects. Khattar also highlighted the importance of State Governments in facilitating PSP development through efficient allocation and clearances.
A nationwide PSP potential of about 224 GW has been identified, with various projects at different stages, including 10 commissioned PSPs (7 GW capacity) and others under construction or planning.
Key policy initiatives have been rolled out to boost PSP development, including waivers of transmission charges and obligations related to local development funds.
