The announcement was made during the curtain raiser programme for International Day of Yoga 2026, where the government unveiled an extensive programme aimed at promoting yoga across India and around the world.
Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for AYUSH and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav announced that the main national celebration would be held at Red Road in Kolkata, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the event.
The Ministry of AYUSH also unveiled the official theme for International Day of Yoga 2026: “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.”
The theme emphasizes the growing importance of yoga in supporting physical fitness, mental wellness, emotional balance and healthy ageing in societies where life expectancy continues to rise.
Speaking on the occasion, Jadhav highlighted the need to ensure that longer lifespans translate into healthier and more meaningful lives.
“Across the world, people are living longer than ever before. The real challenge is to ensure that these added years are healthy, active, independent and meaningful. Yoga offers a time-tested and holistic pathway towards healthy ageing,” the minister said.
The minister also underlined the global significance of Yoga Day, noting that it has evolved into one of the world’s largest wellness movements since the United Nations General Assembly adopted India’s proposal for an International Day of Yoga in 2014.
Today, yoga is practiced across continents and has become a symbol of health, harmony and holistic well-being transcending national boundaries, cultures and languages.
More than 210 Indian Missions abroad, in partnership with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), will organize Yoga Day events at nearly 2,500 locations worldwide.
The global outreach initiative is expected to further strengthen yoga’s role as a universal tool for wellness and preventive healthcare.

One of the major highlights was a nationwide live yoga session held on June 14, which witnessed participation from more than four lakh people simultaneously, setting a new Guinness World Record.
The Ministry of Culture will also organize special Yoga Day programmes at 100 iconic locations across India, showcasing the country’s cultural heritage alongside its ancient wellness traditions.
Another major initiative is the ‘Gangotri to Gangasagar: Ganga Tat Yoga Yatra,’ being conducted from June 13 to June 20, linking yoga with environmental awareness, river conservation and community participation.
The programme seeks to promote a deeper connection between personal well-being and environmental sustainability.
Kolkata, the host city for the national celebrations, will witness a series of pre-event activities, including “Doud se Dhyan” on June 19 and “Vande Yogam” on June 20.
These events aim to blend fitness, wellness, patriotism and cultural heritage while building momentum ahead of the main Yoga Day celebration.
Calling upon citizens to participate in large numbers, Jadhav described yoga as one of India’s greatest contributions to humanity and encouraged people to make it a regular part of their daily lives.
The International Day of Yoga continues to serve as a global platform for promoting preventive healthcare, mental wellness and holistic living in an increasingly fast-paced world.
