Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday commended the growing public participation in the Catch The Rain campaign while addressing the latest edition of Mann Ki Baat. He said the nationwide initiative has evolved into a people’s movement focused on rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharge, and the revival of traditional water bodies. The campaign encourages citizens to conserve rainwater where it falls, ensuring sustainable water management across the country.
Nationwide Water Conservation Efforts Gain Momentum
The Prime Minister noted that since the campaign began on July 4, people from villages, cities, panchayats, and community organisations have actively contributed to water conservation. Across the country, old ponds are being desilted, wells and stepwells restored, and abandoned borewells converted into recharge structures. These community-led efforts are helping improve groundwater levels while preserving traditional water resources.
Highlighting successful examples, PM Modi said Sidhi district in Madhya Pradesh has created nearly 1,500 ponds, while Amrit Sarovars have been restored in Narsinghpur. He also praised Nashik in Maharashtra for expanding water storage capacity and Nandyal in Andhra Pradesh, where every gram panchayat joined the campaign to revive old ponds. Positive outcomes were also reported from Korba, Bhubaneswar, and Vizianagaram.
