NTPC, Maharashtra Govt Join Hands to Scale Up Raigad Hydro Power

New Delhi, April 30: Maharashtra has revised its agreement with NTPC Limited to scale up the combined capacity of the Amba and Kumbhe Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Projects to 2,600 MW from 1,800 MW. The MoU, signed in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, follows technical assessments confirming the feasibility of an additional 800 MW generation capacity.

The revised configuration increases Amba’s capacity to 1,500 MW from 800 MW and Kumbhe’s to 1,100 MW from 1,000 MW. The expansion aligns with recommendations from the Central Electricity Authority and reinforces Maharashtra’s push towards grid stability and renewable integration.

The agreement marks the 60th MoU under the state’s PPP framework for pumped storage, contributing to a broader pipeline of over 82 GW capacity and an estimated investment of Rs 4.28 lakh crore, with potential to generate 1.31 lakh jobs.

Driven by its Renewable Energy and Energy Storage Policy (2025–2036), Maharashtra is positioning itself as a national hub for pumped hydro storage. The policy offers incentives including exemptions on transmission and wheeling charges, electricity duty waivers for pumping operations, and concessional land leasing, alongside assured water allocation mechanisms to attract large-scale private investment.
