New Delhi, Nov 14 Diesel Loco Shed, Tughlakabad is one of Indian Railways’ most prestigious and strategically important shed, currently homing more than 300 locomotives across various classes, including ALCO, HHP, Electric, and Shunting types. The shed’s locomotives power various express and mail trains. They were deployed for VIP movements, underscoring the shed’s critical role.

Currently, Diesel Loco Shed, Tughlakabad homes a total of 139 electric locomotives, with 92 designated for goods (WAG9) and 47 for passenger (WAP4) services. Goods trains, which make fewer stops over longer distances, pose a unique challenge for loco pilots, who often lack access to onboard restroom/washroom facilities. To address this, Diesel Shed Tughlakabad, in line with RDSO’s instructions, has developed and installed waterless urinal technology in two of its electric class freight locomotives.

This innovative system includes a waterless urinal with a WC-type bowl suitable for both men and women. Odour control is managed through membrane traps and liquid sealant cartridges, while a UV LED-based sanitation system ensures hygienic conditions. The urinal bowl was also easy to clean with standard toilet cleaning agents. An onboard computerized processing unit interfaces with the locomotive’s microprocessor, allowing use of the urinal only when the train is at a pre-set speed, as configured during installation.

With this technological advancement, Diesel Loco Shed Tughlakabad has demonstrated its commitment to meeting loco pilots’ needs, contributing to safer, more efficient train operations across Indian Railways.
