NLCIL’s Mine IA Bags Top Prize; Talabira II & III, Barsingsar Rated Five Star

New Delhi, Sept 05: NLC India Limited (NLCIL), a Navratna CPSE under the Ministry of Coal, has achieved significant recognition with all its operating mines receiving prestigious Star Ratings from the Ministry of Coal for the 2023-24 period, underscoring its leadership in sustainable mining and operational excellence.

The Star Rating framework, established in 2019 to foster competitiveness and responsible mining practices, assesses mines across seven parameters, including operations, environment, safety, rehabilitation, technology adoption, and worker welfare. NLCIL has consistently participated since the framework’s inception.

The awards ceremony took place in Mumbai on September 4, 2025, where the Minister of Coal & Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, and the Minister of State for Coal & Mines, Satish Chandra Dubey, presented the accolades. Minister Reddy emphasized the crucial role of collective efforts from government PSUs and private companies in achieving energy independence and the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047. NLCIL’s Chairman and Managing Director, Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, along with other senior management officials, received the awards on behalf of the company.

In the recent evaluation, NLCIL’s Lignite Mine-IA of Neyveli secured a Five-Star rating, positioning it among the top opencast mines in India. Additionally, the Talabira II & III OCP and the Barsingsar Lignite Mine also earned Five-Star ratings, while Lignite Mine-I and Lignite Mine-II received Four-Star ratings. Since the Star Rating system’s introduction in 2018-19, NLCIL’s five operating mines have collectively garnered 29 Star Ratings, including 21 Five-Star recognitions. NLCIL leads nationally in the proportion of Five-Star ratings received relative to its total awards.

Despite operating with a concentrated mining base, NLCIL is strategically expanding and aims to double its capacity within the next five years. The company consistently outperforms larger competitors in the coal and lignite mining sector, maintaining national No. 1 positions and demonstrating a renewed focus on productivity, innovation, safety, and environmental care under its current leadership.

Motupalli expressed gratitude, attributing the Star Ratings to the teams’ dedication to safety, sustainability, and technology-driven productivity, reaffirming NLCIL’s commitment to responsible growth and setting new benchmarks in sustainable mining. NLCIL’s performance highlights its contribution to India’s energy security as a responsible energy PSU.
