Commercial LPG Price Hike in Chennai Likely to Push Up Food Costs
New Delhi, April 01: A sharp increase in commercial LPG prices has come into effect in Chennai from April 1, intensifying cost pressures on the city’s food and hospitality sector.
The price of a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder has risen by ₹203 to ₹2,246.50, following the monthly revision by oil marketing companies. The hike is attributed to rising global crude oil prices and currency fluctuations, further impacted by supply disruptions linked to the West Asia conflict.
The increase has significantly affected hotels, restaurants, and small food businesses, many of which are already grappling with elevated input costs. Industry participants indicate that the latest hike may lead to menu price revisions as businesses attempt to protect margins.
While domestic LPG prices remain unchanged, providing some relief to households, the indirect impact of higher commercial fuel costs is expected to pass through to consumers via increased food prices.
The development underscores mounting inflationary pressures in urban consumption segments, particularly in food services, where fuel costs form a key component of operating expenses.
