New Delhi, Feb 27: Indian Railways has sanctioned multiple strategic infrastructure projects across Northern, Southern and Eastern Railway zones to enhance maintenance capacity, decongest key corridors and boost passenger and freight operations.
In Rajasthan, the Railways approved Phase-I development of coach maintenance facilities at Shri Ganganagar Station at a cost of ₹174.26 crore. The project will support modern rolling stock, including LHB and Vande Bharat trains, with new washing lines, stabling lines, pit lines, a wheel lathe line and a sick line shed. The facility is expected to increase maintenance capacity by six additional rakes per day.
Under Phase-II, augmentation of coaching maintenance facilities at Lalgarh in the Bikaner region has been sanctioned at ₹139.68 crore. The project includes new washing lines, covered sheds, an extended sick line, synchronized coach lifting systems, Automatic Coach Washing Plants and EOT cranes to support the expanding Vande Bharat fleet.
In Kerala, the Railways approved doubling of the 21.10-km Turavur–Mararikulam section under Southern Railway at a cost of ₹450.59 crore. The section lies on the crucial Ernakulam–Alappuzha–Kayankulam corridor and will enhance passenger and freight movement, including port-linked cargo to Cochin Port.
