India’s electronics manufacturing sector has witnessed seven-fold growth in production and generated nearly 25 lakh jobs over the past decade, according to the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY). Driven by the Make in India and PLI schemes, the sector has emerged as a key engine of exports, employment and industrial growth.
Key Highlights
- India’s electronics production has grown from Rs 1.90 lakh crore to Rs 13.11 lakh crore in a decade.
- The sector has generated nearly 25 lakh direct and indirect jobs, including over 12 lakh in mobile manufacturing.
- Electronics exports have increased eleven-fold to Rs 4.24 lakh crore, making the sector India’s third-largest export category.
- Women now account for nearly 70% of the direct workforce in mobile phone manufacturing.
New Delhi, July 15: India’s electronics manufacturing industry has recorded remarkable growth over the past decade, with production increasing nearly seven-fold and employment reaching almost 25 lakh, according to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). The expansion highlights the success of the Make in India initiative and government policies aimed at transforming India into a global electronics manufacturing hub.
According to MeitY, electronics production has grown from Rs 1.90 lakh crore in 2014-15 to an estimated Rs 13.11 lakh crore in 2025-26. During the same period, electronics exports surged from Rs 38,263 crore to Rs 4.24 lakh crore, registering an eleven-fold increase. Electronic goods have now become India’s third-largest export category, with exports reaching $47.96 billion in FY26.
The ministry said the sector has emerged as one of the country’s fastest-growing employment generators. The mobile phone manufacturing ecosystem alone supports nearly 12 lakh direct and indirect jobs, while MeitY’s flagship schemes have created more than 5.3 lakh jobs, including around 1.8 lakh under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing.
Women have become a major driving force behind India’s electronics manufacturing success. They account for nearly 30% of the total workforce created in the sector over the last decade and around 70% of the direct workforce in mobile phone manufacturing. The PLI Scheme alone has created employment opportunities for around 90,000 women, strengthening female participation in formal manufacturing.
The rapid expansion is reflected in major manufacturing hubs such as Hosur in Tamil Nadu, where thousands of women are employed in producing smartphones and electronic components for global markets. Across three major manufacturing facilities operated by a leading electronics company, around 80,000 people are employed, with women comprising nearly 65% of the workforce.
The government credited the PLI Scheme for Large Scale Electronics Manufacturing as a key catalyst behind the industry’s transformation. As of March 31, 2026, the scheme had attracted over Rs 20,600 crore in investments, generated production worth more than Rs 11.62 lakh crore, and supported exports exceeding Rs 6.53 lakh crore, reinforcing India’s position as a global electronics manufacturing destination.
India’s electronics manufacturing sector has become a cornerstone of the country’s industrial growth, creating millions of jobs, boosting exports and strengthening India’s position as a leading global manufacturing and innovation hub through the Make in India and PLI initiatives.
