Tokyo, April 06: India’s Ambassador to Japan Nagma Mallick met Japanese lawmaker Koichi Hagiuda, Executive Acting Secretary General of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), on Monday to explore ways to further deepen the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.
The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation, including strengthening parliamentary exchanges between the two countries, according to the Indian Embassy in Japan.
India-Japan ties have evolved significantly over the years — from a ‘Global Partnership’ in 2000 to a ‘Strategic and Global Partnership’ in 2006, and later elevated to a ‘Special Strategic and Global Partnership’ in 2014. The partnership today spans multiple sectors, with defence and security cooperation emerging as a key pillar, particularly amid shared interests in ensuring peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
Recent high-level engagements underscore the growing momentum in bilateral ties. External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar met his Japanese counterpart Toshimitsu Motegi on the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Ministers Meeting in France last month.
Earlier, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri held talks with Sadamasa Oue, Special Advisor to the Japanese Prime Minister, focusing on defence technology and economic security cooperation.
In February, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Japanese leader Sanae Takaichi on her victory in the House of Representatives elections, expressing confidence in further strengthening bilateral ties under her leadership.
The continued engagements highlight the shared commitment of India and Japan to expand cooperation across strategic, economic and security domains, reinforcing their partnership as a key pillar of regional and global stability.
