New Delhi, May 25 Heavy rain hit Delhi-NCR hard, upending daily life. Thunderstorms and strong winds struck overnight, leading to significant waterlogging. Commuters faced blocked roads from fallen trees and traffic jams. Areas like Minto Road, near the airport, and Moti Bagh were particularly affected.
As the sun rose, travel became a challenge. Flooded roads and debris made getting around tough for many. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert for Delhi, warning of more rain and wind gusts of 40-60 km/h. Their “Nowcast” model helps track weather changes in real-time. They advised people to stay indoors, avoid water bodies, and steer clear of trees and weak structures.
At Indira Gandhi International Airport, the rain caused flight delays. IndiGo Airlines announced at 3:59 a.m. that operations were temporarily interrupted due to the weather. By 6 a.m., things were back to normal. Airport officials confirmed some flights were affected and urged travelers to check for updates with their airlines.
In Ghaziabad, the storm brought a welcome break from heat, but waterlogging remained an issue, especially in Indirapuram and Swarn Jayanti Park. Power outages were reported across the region after the dust storm and heavy rain.
This downpour came shortly after the southwest monsoon arrived in Kerala on May 23, a week earlier than usual. It’s the earliest onset since 2009, with the monsoon expected to reach most of the country by July 8 and start withdrawing from northwest India around September 17.
