New Delhi, March 27: Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has categorically dismissed rumours of a nationwide lockdown, stating that no such proposal is under consideration by the Government of India.
In a statement on X, Puri said the government is closely monitoring global developments across energy, supply chains, and essential commodities, while ensuring uninterrupted availability of critical resources.
He emphasised that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India remains prepared to handle emerging challenges through proactive and coordinated measures.
“Rumours of a lockdown in India are completely false. There is no such proposal under consideration,” Puri said, urging citizens to remain calm and avoid spreading misinformation.
The clarification comes amid heightened speculation driven by global oil and gas disruptions and concerns over LPG availability. The government has reiterated that there are no plans to impose restrictions on public movement or economic activity.
Officials also clarified that recent remarks by the Prime Minister regarding “preparedness” were misinterpreted. These statements were made in the context of contingency planning linked to tensions in West Asia and their potential economic impact, not as an indication of lockdown measures.
The spread of rumours was further amplified by comparisons to the COVID-19 lockdown in India, though authorities stressed that current preparedness efforts are limited to administrative readiness.
Reiterating India’s resilience in managing global uncertainties, the government called for responsible communication and warned that misinformation during such periods can create unnecessary panic and disrupt public confidence.
