GAIL to invest Rs. 3,800 cr for 700 MW solar projects in UP, Maharashtra

GAIL completes laying over 97.6 % of Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga

New Delhi, April 14 GAIL (India) Limited has approved an investment of ₹3,800 crore to develop 700 MW of solar power capacity across Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, marking a significant step in its renewable energy expansion strategy.

The company will set up a 600 MW solar project integrated with a 550 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at the TUSCO Solar Park in Jhansi. The project is aimed at meeting the captive energy requirements of GAIL’s petrochemical facility at Pata in Auraiya district.

Additionally, GAIL plans to develop a 100 MW solar project with a 22 MWh BESS in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar district (formerly Aurangabad) in Maharashtra. This installation will primarily supply power to the company’s PDH-PP plant at Usar in Raigad district.

The integration of battery storage systems is expected to address intermittency challenges associated with solar generation and enable more reliable, round-the-clock renewable energy supply.

Chairman and Managing Director Deepak Gupta said the projects will scale up GAIL’s installed renewable energy capacity to over 1,000 MW from the current 147 MW upon commissioning. He added that the move aligns with the company’s long-term strategy of combining growth with sustainability and energy security.

The investment underscores GAIL’s push to diversify its portfolio and strengthen its position as an integrated energy player, while contributing to India’s broader energy transition and net-zero ambitions.
