Seven high-speed corridors to cut travel time, boost green mobility
New Delhi, Feb 01 The Centre on Sunday proposed to develop seven high-speed rail corridors linking key urban and economic centres, aiming to cut travel time, reduce emissions and support regional growth.
Announcing the proposal during her Union Budget 2026–27 speech, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the corridors will act as “growth connectors” and promote environmentally sustainable passenger transport.
The proposed routes are Mumbai–Pune, Pune–Hyderabad, Hyderabad–Bengaluru, Hyderabad–Chennai, Chennai–Bengaluru, Delhi–Varanasi, and Varanasi–Siliguri. Together, they will connect financial hubs, technology centres, manufacturing clusters and emerging cities through faster and cleaner mobility.
“In order to promote environmentally sustainable passenger systems, we will develop seven high-speed rail corridors between cities as growth connectors,” Sitharaman said.
