Alok Kumar (IAS) assumes charge as Secretary, Ministry of Power


New Delhi: Alok Kumar (IAS) has assumed charge as Secretary in the Ministry of Power on Monday. Prior to taking over as Secretary, Ministry of Power, he was serving as Principal Secretary (Power) of the state government of Uttar Pradesh. He was also Chairman of UP Power Transmission Corporation Limited. With his new assignment, Kumar has replaced Sanjeev Nandan Sahai (IAS), who superannuated on January 31.

Profile of Alok Kumar (IAS)

Alok Kumar did his B.E.(Civil) from IIT Roorkee in year 1983 and later Has acquired MBA in Finance. He has held senior positions in U.P. Government and Government of India.

Before joining as Union Power Secretary in February, 2021, he was Additional Chief Secretary, Industrial Development and IT & Electronics in Government of Uttar Pradesh.

He has acquired widely recognized expertise in policy and regulatory affairs of India’s electricity sector, while working for more than seven years in the sector at national level and about three years at State level in Uttar Pradesh. He has been CEO of various public enterprises in transport and electricity sectors. He has also worked in the areas of skill development,handcraft based micro enterprises, apprenticeship programmes and National Career Services.

He has authored a book on policy and regulation of electricity industry in India which was published by Oxford University Press in year 2012.
