New Delhi, July 24: India’s special economic package worth nearly $680 million for Mauritius marks a significant step in strengthening the longstanding partnership between the two countries, according to Mauritius Foreign Minister Dhananjay Ramful. The package, which includes grants and concessional lines of credit, reflects the priority India places on its relationship with Mauritius under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking to IANS, Ramful said the India-Mauritius partnership has evolved into a comprehensive strategic relationship, extending beyond traditional diplomacy to include infrastructure development, education, healthcare, technology, capacity building and economic cooperation. He noted that several landmark development projects in Mauritius have been implemented with India’s financial assistance.

The minister highlighted the growing economic engagement between the two nations, stating that the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation and Partnership Agreement (CECPA) has significantly boosted trade and investment. Bilateral trade has reached approximately $887 million, while Mauritius continues to be the second-largest source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into India, reflecting strong investor confidence and deep economic integration.

Ramful also said both countries are moving ahead with new joint projects following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mauritius in 2025, during which the bilateral relationship was elevated to a higher level. The upcoming initiatives are expected to further strengthen cooperation in strategic sectors, infrastructure development and economic growth.

Describing the relationship as a blueprint for the Global South, the minister said India and Mauritius have demonstrated how developing nations can collaborate effectively through partnerships in maritime security, healthcare, digital technology, land transport and port infrastructure. He added that the growing cooperation benefits both countries while contributing to regional development.

On regional security, Ramful reaffirmed the commitment of both nations to maintaining a safe, secure and rules-based Indian Ocean. He said collaboration through initiatives such as MAHASAGAR, information-sharing mechanisms and regular joint naval exercises continues to strengthen maritime security and promote peace and stability across the Indian Ocean region.

The $680 million economic package and expanding collaboration across strategic sectors underscore the deepening India-Mauritius partnership, reinforcing both countries’ commitment to economic growth, regional security and shared development in the Global South.
