India now has 52,718 public EV charging stations, including 16,561 fast chargers, the Centre informed Parliament. The government is expanding charging infrastructure through the FAME-II and PM E-DRIVE schemes while promoting electric mobility, domestic EV manufacturing, and the deployment of thousands of electric buses across major cities.

India has significantly expanded its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, with 52,718 public EV charging stations currently operational across the country, the Centre informed Parliament. The announcement reflects the government’s continued focus on accelerating electric mobility and supporting the growing EV ecosystem.
Replying to a question in the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Heavy Industries Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma said that 16,561 charging stations are equipped with fast chargers for electric cars. The availability of fast charging infrastructure is expected to reduce charging time and improve convenience for EV users.
The government said it has allocated Rs 912.50 crore under the FAME-II scheme and Rs 2,000 crore under the PM E-DRIVE scheme to strengthen public EV charging infrastructure across cities and national highways. These investments are aimed at improving accessibility and encouraging wider EV adoption.
According to the Centre, the Guidelines for Installation and Operation of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure 2024 provide standards for a connected and interoperable charging network, including battery swapping facilities. The government has also classified EV charging stations as an unlicensed activity, making it easier for private players to invest in the sector.
To boost domestic manufacturing, electric passenger vehicles have been included under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Automobile and Auto Components. Eligible manufacturers receive financial incentives ranging from 13 to 18 per cent on incremental sales of Advanced Automotive Technology (AAT) vehicles, including electric four-wheelers.
The government further stated that Rs 4,391 crore has been earmarked under the PM E-DRIVE scheme for deploying 14,028 electric buses. Of these, 13,800 buses have already been allocated to Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune and Surat, with the operator selection process completed in two phases.
