The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has clarified that E20 petrol may reduce fuel mileage by 3–5% in some vehicles but delivers higher octane, cleaner combustion, lower emissions and improved engine performance. The ministry said extensive industry consultations ensured vehicle compatibility before the nationwide rollout.
Key Highlights
- E20 petrol may reduce mileage by 3–5% in certain vehicles.
- Higher octane rating, cleaner combustion and lower emissions are key benefits of E20.
- Automobile manufacturers support E20, with no major field issues reported.
- India’s ethanol programme has attracted nearly ₹1 lakh crore annual investment in production infrastructure.
New Delhi, July 10: The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has clarified that while E20 ethanol-blended petrol may result in a 3–5 per cent reduction in fuel economy for some vehicles, the fuel delivers several significant advantages that extend well beyond mileage. According to the ministry, higher octane levels, superior anti-knock properties, faster combustion, smoother acceleration, better pickup and cleaner engine operation make E20 a more efficient and environmentally friendly fuel.
The ministry said the transition to 20 per cent ethanol blending followed extensive consultations with automobile manufacturers, component suppliers, testing agencies and research institutions. The roadmap for E20 implementation was placed in the public domain in 2021, allowing sufficient time for vehicle manufacturers and the automotive industry to prepare for the transition.
Before the nationwide rollout, experts evaluated material compatibility, engine calibration, fuel systems, durability, drivability, emissions and fuel efficiency to ensure the new fuel met safety and performance standards. The ministry emphasised that vehicle manufacturers would not have supported E20 or honoured warranties unless they were fully satisfied with the testing outcomes and long-term reliability.
Supporting its position with industry data, the ministry noted that Maruti Suzuki serviced 2.84 crore vehicles during FY 2025–26, including 1.5 crore older vehicles that were not originally certified for E20, without reporting E20-related corrosion, abnormal wear or component damage. Hero MotoCorp also reported similar field experience, indicating that large-scale real-world usage has validated the fuel’s reliability.
Beyond vehicle performance, the ministry highlighted the environmental benefits of E20 petrol, stating that it produces negligible particulate emissions and can reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by nearly 40 per cent compared to conventional petrol. It also clarified that comparisons between E20 and premium petrol are misleading, as premium fuels are niche products with specialised additives, whereas maintaining separate nationwide supply chains for pure petrol, E10 and E20 would be operationally and economically impractical.
The ministry further stated that India’s ethanol blending programme has attracted nearly ₹1 lakh crore annually in investments through public sector bank financing. These investments have supported the development of ethanol plants, distilleries, storage infrastructure and logistics networks, strengthening India’s energy security while reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels.
Conclusion
The Petroleum Ministry maintains that although E20 petrol may slightly reduce mileage, its performance, environmental and energy security benefits make it a key component of India’s clean fuel strategy and long-term sustainable mobility goals.
