New Delhi, May 29: India has crossed the milestone of connecting 40 lakh households to rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, marking a significant step in the country’s clean energy transition, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Friday.
The minister described the achievement as a major boost to India’s renewable energy ambitions, stating that the scheme is helping households reduce electricity expenses, promote energy self-reliance and support environmental sustainability.
Sharing the update on social media, Puri said the initiative, launched under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is positioning India as a growing solar power leader while empowering citizens through clean energy adoption.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal also highlighted the programme’s impact, noting that more than 40 lakh families have adopted rooftop solar systems under the scheme.
He said the initiative is transforming rooftops into energy-generating assets, enabling households to become more self-reliant while contributing to India’s broader energy transition.
Government spending under the scheme has accelerated sharply, with Rs 14,585.29 crore utilised in FY26 (till March 5) compared to Rs 7,822.92 crore in FY25.
Launched in 2024, the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is a demand-driven programme that allows residential consumers with grid-connected electricity connections to apply for rooftop solar installations through the scheme’s national portal.
The government estimates that installing rooftop solar systems in one crore households could generate around 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity over time and potentially reduce carbon emissions by nearly 720 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent during the systems’ 25-year lifecycle.
According to official data, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Rajasthan have emerged as the top-performing states in implementation.
The development aligns with the government’s wider clean energy strategy, which also includes the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) aimed at positioning India as a global hub for green hydrogen production, usage and exports.
